12th Annual Whatsonstage.com Awards: LAST CHANCE TO VOTE

Don't miss your last chance to vote for David Tennant, Catherine Tate and Much Ado About Nothing in the Whatsonstage Awards 2012.

This week is the last chance for theatregoers to vote for their favourite acts and performances for the 12th annual Whatsonstage.com Awards. Voting closes Tuesday 31 January, so time is running out to make your vote count at Whatsonstage.com.  Over 45,000 people have already voted for their favourite performers and productions for this year’s Whatsonstage.com Awards. The awards are also known as the theatregoers’ choice awards, the only major UK theatre awards decided exclusively by members of the paying audience. A single vote could make a vital difference across a multitude of categories – in last year’s voting, one category was decided by just 14 votes. Some of the tightly contested categories this year are: David Tennant and Benedict Cumberbatch go head to head for the Best Actor in a Play gong for their work in Much Ado About Nothing and Frankenstein respectively. Catherine Tate and Sheridan Smith are both in contention for Best Supporting Actress in a Play. The award for Best New Musical includes Tim Minchin’s critically acclaimed Matilda. Olympic opening ceremony director Danny Boyle is in the running for Best Director for Frankenstein and is fighting a fierce contest with Matilda and Ghost director Matthew Warchus. The stage reunion between Catherine Tate and David Tennant in Much Ado About Nothing battles it out with The Phantom of the Opera’s 25th anniversary concert for the Theatre Event of The Year Award. The winners will be announced from 7pm on Sunday 19 February at the star-studded Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre. This year it will be held in aid of Stage One and will also include performances from various nominees and potential winners.

About the Whatsonstage.com Awards
All professional productions – from West End, Off-West End and Fringe – opened in London between 1 December 2010 and 30 November 2011 are eligible for nomination in the 2012 Awards. More than 11,000 took part in November’s nominations phase, to try to put their favourite productions and performances in the Awards running. These submissions were reviewed by the editorial board to draw up the shortlists. Voting, which continues until 31 January, takes place online and is strictly monitored, with only one vote accepted per person.

Over 46,000 people voted in the last Awards, which culminated with the star-studded Awards Concert and Ceremony at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre on Sunday 14 February 2011, co-hosted by Miranda Hart, Christopher Biggins and Sheridan Smith. Tickets for the 2012 Awards Concert on Sunday 19 February will be sold exclusively to readers of Whatsonstage.com and Time Out.
