New Drama Project: The Minor Character

David Tennant will be starring in a one-off drama for Sky Arts as part of a new season of programmes commissioned by the channel following a large budget increase. The drama, The Minor Character, is based on a short story by Will Self, with David playing a witty and acerbic artist called Will. It is to be shown as part of a new comedy and drama strand called Playhouse Presents.

The new strand is just part of the latest offering by the channel as parent company Sky wish to reposition it as a natural rival to BBC4, offering a similar mix of arts-based programming and high quality drama. Sky Arts are also bringing The South Bank Show and a Michael Parkinson talk show back to screens. Playhouse Presents is due to come to Sky Arts from April 2012, and also includes performances from Emma Thompson, Russell Tovey, Trevor Eve, Martin Shaw, Stephen Fry, Brenda Blethyn and John Hurt, among others. According to the channel, " ...the series showcases the incredible wealth of acting, directing and writing talent in the UK, and represents unmissable TV for Sky customers".
