Gregory Doran On David Tennant: "One Of The Hardest Working Actors I Know"

Gregory Doran has explained to the Royal Shakespeare Company why he was so keen to work with David Tennant again on his new production of William Shakespeare's great historical play Richard II. In a Q&A posted on the company's website he said,

"The thing about David and why I love working with him is that he is a consummate professional. He is at absolute ease with Shakespeare's language and effortlessly makes it sound contemporary.

"He is also one of the hardest working actors I know, and never appears in rehearsals without knowing his lines! He also has a great sense of humour - which is why his Hamlet was so witty- he gets the humour in things."

Greg also talks about his reasons for choosing the play, the themes that he feels are still contemporary and his excitement around the potential of the Live From Stratford-upon-Avon stream of the play to increase the national and international reach of the RSC.

Richard II stars David Tennant as King Richard with Nigel Lindsay as Bolingbroke, Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York, Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt and Jane Lapotaire as the Duchess of Gloucester. The play will open at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on 10th October 2013 and will run until 16th November 2013. It will then transfer to the Barbican Theatre in London from December 9th 2013 until 25th January 2014.
