David Tennant Faces Young Critic On The Set Of His New Film

David Tennant, star of the new BBC Films comedy feature What We Did on Our Holiday faced fierce critical reaction on the set of the movie last year from one of his co-stars - Harriet Turnbull, who plays his five year old daughter Jess.

Andy Hamilton, who with writing partner Guy Jenkin created and directed the semi-improvised black comedy, has detailed the making of the movie in an on-set diary published in the Telegraph Culture magazine today. He spoke of the moment when David and Harriet first met.

Pointing at David, the young actress declared “I know you. You’re the man who’s always on TV telling us to buy stuff. Why do you have to do that?”

“Well, I’m telling people all about Virgin,” David explained.

“Yes,” Harriet retorted, “But you only need to tell us once.”

Harriet Turnbull is one of three child actors who play the children of Doug and Abi McLeod (David Tennant and Rosamund Pike) - the others being Bobby Smalldridge (Mickey) and Amelia Jones (Lottie). In a video interview for RTÉ, David praised Harriet's 'fizzing energy'.

"She has all the candidness and freshness of someone so small," he said. "[The children] put me in my place quite readily, which is, I guess, how it should be."

What We Did On Our Holiday starring David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly and Ben Miller follows a family on the verge of divorce on a fraught trip to the Scottish Highlands to celebrate a family birthday. It goes on general release across the UK and Ireland on Friday 26th September.
