David Tennant has been talking about the improvisation techniques used in the making of his new film, the BBC Films production What We Did On Our Holiday. He spoke about filming to Premiere Scene on Monday night on the red carpet at the world premiere of the new black comedy from the makers of Outnumbered.
David said that his fears of the technique were allayed by writer / director team Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, who used similar methods during the making of the BBC sitcom and were able to coax the best performances out of their child actors.
"Improvisation can be terrifying if you're just put in a room and it's like 'Just start acting and be funny!'" he said. "But because they know exactly what they're trying to get...and they have a way of freeing the kids up to just be kids, and you get to see that on screen. It's glorious to be part of."

What We Did On Our Holiday follows a family of five on a trip to Scotland to celebrate a family birthday. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike play Doug and Abi McLeod, who are trying to keep news of their impending divorce a secret from Doug's ailing father Gordie (Billy Connolly) - but this turns out to be the least of their worries.
The film opens in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday 26th September.
