Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #10

"Doctor... you are coming back?"

Gabby and the Doctor are back in New York after a terrifying excursion into the past, catching up with family and friends... until THE ECHO strikes, amplifying everyday noise into ear-shattering, mind-splinteringly debilitating waves of sound. What is the Echo – and can the Doctor and Gabby solve the mystery before the cacophony drives the city mad?

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #10 is a one-shot adventure written by Robbie Morrison (Drowntown, Nikolai Dante) with art by Eleonora Carlini.

Review:
When the Doctor lost Donna he didn’t think he should travel with a companion again, but his meeting with Gabby several issues ago changed his mind. But now he’s seen the talented artist at risk from a psychic artist and the deadly Weeping Angels, not to mention the battlefields of the Great War he’s beginning to wonder if he made the right choice. Returning to New York with Gabby only a couple of hours after he left with her, he leaves her to visit her family. But is that all that he plans? We all know how much the Doctor hates goodbyes.

However, where the Doctor goes trouble isn’t often far away. Poor New York, the city has only just shaken off the horror of the Cerebravores and now it’s driven to the point of madness by the ear-splitting amplification effects of the Echo. But as the Doctor soon discovers, the Echo aren’t the villain.

Robbie Morrison’s one off story shows the Doctor as we know and love him, as the champion of the abused, the misused and the threatened, where the beautiful and benign is persecuted by the cruel. However, it also establishes Gabby as an indispensible part of the Doctor’s world, so whatever his reasons for walking away from her at her family’s restaurant, he’s happy to travel to the next adventure with her at his side. Eleonora’s artwork has a pleasing pop art quality while the contrast between the ethereal sound beings and their grotesque hunters leaves no doubt that the Doctor has made the right choice.
